Ernest Miller, Chief Technology Officer

Ernest is FineEye’s principle scientist and is arguably one of the world’s leading color experts, distinguished by a rare combination of deep theoretical and applied expertise. He is credited with developing the company’s core ICE (Intelligent Color Engine) technology, the culmination of forty years focused on the technology and practice of commercial printing and prepress imaging.

Ernest started his career by earning journeyman accreditation in every offset printing and prepress discipline while moving through the commercial printing ranks. He later embarked on a successful series of entrepreneurial ventures in printing and high end prepress. Most recently, Ernest was the owner and chief color scientist at Grand Master’s Color, a 100+ person high end prepress house based in Portland and Seattle.

Throughout his career, Ernest supplemented his practical experience with a rigorous regimen of independent study and formal course work in subject areas including fluid dynamics, differential calculus, color science, Newtonian physics, optics and quantum mechanics, among others. He tapped his uncommonly deep theoretical and practical knowledge to produce several innovations over the years, including an optics-based color separation technique, an inkjet proofing system and a flow-resistant inking system. The latter was used on a proofing press that Ernest designed, and also resulted in one of his two issued patents. He has additional patents pending on the ICE technology.
